Rino had rushed to save Shinichi, who’d narrowly escaped death and resumed training. This was his third day.

“People used to call me a little weakling, but now I’m pretty buff!” Shinichi marveled, unable to resist flexing his muscles. He was stronger than the time he’d used questionable training gear.

“Wow! Amazing! You look just like Daddy!”

“Repulsive.” Celes was spitting her normal venom in stark contrast to Rino, who was excitedly swinging from Shinichi’s arm.

“Anyway, I think that’s enough strength training for now,” said Shinichi.

Doing much more would damage his health. Truth be told, it was more painful to keep eating all the food he needed to build muscle. It’d be different on Earth with its gourmet cuisine, but here he was eating lots of unfamiliar ingredients from the demon world: gamy meats and boiled weeds. It would have been less painful to undergo torture, which is why he wanted to focus his attention on the demons and their fantastical power.

“So how would I be able to use magic?” asked Shinichi, looking expectantly at Celes and Rino, but the two just tilted their heads in confusion.

“Hmm? You can’t use magic?” asked Rino.

“I understand your question, but it’s kind of like asking if you can teach humans how to breathe,” said Celes.

Demons were different from humans in that they were born with magical powers and the capacity to use them. They might be able to help with incantations, but they had no idea how to teach someone incapable of it.

“Right… But I feel like I can use it now for some reason.”

Shinichi’s body felt different from before he underwent his super-high-speed strength training. It felt like something more than blood was now running through him—something hot. At first, he thought it was the aftereffects of Pain Block or Self-Healing Power Boost, but that wasn’t the case.

“I am not sure I completely understand. But if you feel that you can, maybe you should test it?” suggested Celes doubtfully after hearing Shinichi’s explanation of this unfamiliar sensation in his body.

“All right! Let’s try it, then. How do I cast magic?” asked Shinichi.

“It’s easy. You just think Become like this, and say the name!” said Rino.

“Uh, that’s it?” Shinichi, not entirely trusting Rino’s explanation, looked to Celes, who nodded in agreement.

“Yes, I am not sure what you expected, but magic is very simple. My teacher told me, ‘At its source, magic has only one possible effect,’” explained Celes.

“And what is that?” Shinichi asked.

“My teacher said magic is ‘a way to alter reality to match your imagination.’ Whether it’s throwing a ball of fire or making a pillar of ice, it all comes from the same foundation, albeit with different results,” elaborated Celes.

“So what about incantations and magic circles?”

“They are simply tools to help strengthen the image of what you want. You are much more likely to see the fire in your mind if you say Burst forth, red flames than if you tried to do it without saying anything.”

Shinichi began unconsciously tapping as his understanding grew.
